Under the supervision of the General Counsel and Paralegal/Intake Coordinator, the Host Intern assists in effectively processing legal requests from members of the public, maintaining the Legal Service database, and providing occasional litigation support to hired lawyers and cooperating volunteer lawyers. The intake articling student reports directly to the Legal Director and Paralegal/Intake Coordinator, but works closely with lawyers and the Executive Director. The Student Admissions Intern supports the legal department of the ACLU of Wisconsin. This is a part-time volunteer position, ideal for a law student or paralegal student interested in civil liberties issues. Summer students work closely with the General Counsel and staff counsel on case development and litigation. Students may write dissertations, dissertations and other legal documents; conducting legal research and preparing memoranda; Development of legal strategies and theories; gather evidence; and attend meetings with clients, conferences with opposing counsel and court proceedings. Summer articling students also have the opportunity to greet potential clients, interact with other lawyers and experts, and attend press conferences and government meetings. The ACLU of Wisconsin runs two programs for law students: one during the summer and one during the academic year. Our articling students gain valuable skills in client interviewing, legal research and writing, and community organizing. It also provides an opportunity to develop legal research and writing skills through practical applications. The student will work on issues relating to the functioning of city government, which will help to better understand Wisconsin`s local government. The City Attorney oversees the articling program, and he and other staff will assign projects to ensure a consistent workload and variety of tasks.
