It`s hard to believe that more than a year has passed since I became Director of the MA in ALS Program and BC Notaries Chair in Applied Legal Studies at Simon Fraser University. Courses taught in the first fall semester typically use a mixed type of delivery where students are on campus for up to two weeks at the beginning of the semester. Weeks 3 to 12 are offered online through the Centre for Online and Distance Learning. Spring semester courses are also offered online with a short on-campus course time at the beginning of the semester.
Students visit the campus for a short period of classes at the beginning of the summer holidays, followed by online courses (usually from early May to late June). The last Capstone course of the fall semester follows the same mixed delivery mode. Students also take a final exam (usually at the end of the fourth semester), demonstrating a mastery of the depth and breadth of key aspects of the program`s theme. Ultimately, the Society of Notaries Public of British Columbia regulates the entry of individuals into notarial practice. The award of this degree is not a guarantee of a position in the Society`s postgraduate professional development programs or in notarial practice.
