The Legal Aid Society of Rochester is a non-profit organization that provides direct civil services to adults and children, including secular representation and related social services. The Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York provides free civil legal assistance to low-income New Yorkers in upstate New York. We have 106 employees in five offices in the region, serving 16 counties and the St.
Regis Indian Reserve. The Legal Aid Society is more than a law firm for low-income New Yorkers. It is an indispensable part of New York City`s legal, social, and economic fabric – passionate about advocating for individuals and families in a variety of civil, criminal defense, and juvenile justice matters, while fighting for legal reform. Like the city we represent, Legal Aid is one of the most diverse law firms in the country. Legal aid in civil matters is financed from various sources. The public funding comes from a congressional grant to the Legal Services Corporation, as well as grants from federal, state, and local governments. LASNNY also receives funding for the Civil Justice Service of the Office of Court Administration (OCA). Private support comes from charitable donations and foundation grants, as well as the pro bono services of private lawyers, law students and others.
However, studies show that funding for civil legal aid covers only 20% of needs. We offer free advice, short-term service, referrals, municipal legal education and comprehensive representation in a variety of legal matters. Our civil practice operates through a network of neighbourhood offices and courts and 21 citywide units and programs that provide comprehensive legal assistance to clients with housing, homelessness and foreclosure prevention issues. family law and domestic violence; Labour law; public assistance services; disability-related assistance; Health legislation; HIV/AIDS and chronic diseases; prior right; Tax; consumer law; education law; Immigration; legal assistance for the development of the Community; and reintegration and reintegration issues for formerly incarcerated clients. While most defendants have a constitutional right to a lawyer, there is no right to legal representation in civil cases. Civil legal assistance fills this gap: the Amsterdam office of the Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York provides civil law services to low-income residents of Fulton, Montgomery and Schoharie counties.
